Diwali Decor Guide: How to Decorate Your Home

Diwali decor comes down to layering light, colour and a few well-placed pieces at your entrance, puja space and living room. Here's how to plan it room by room, whether you want a simple refresh or a full festive makeover.

1. Start at the front door

Your entrance sets the tone for the whole house, and it's the first thing guests and neighbours see. A toran (door hanging) or bandarwal (a longer strand, often used across the doorframe) is the classic starting point.

Marigold and floral torans (like our Marigold Diwali Toran) work well for a traditional look, while woven wheel or mirror-centre designs suit a more decorative entrance. If your door frame is wide, a bandarwal that spans the full width reads better than a single small toran that gets lost.

2. Layer in bandarwals and garlands for length

Bandarwals and garlands are ideal for framing doorways, staircase railings, balconies or a mandir/puja shelf. Because they're sold by the set, you can mix pieces to cover longer stretches without gaps.

A good rule of thumb: measure the length you want to cover, then check the "set of X pieces" note on each product — most bandarwal sets are designed to be strung together edge to edge.

3. Add wall hangings and accents indoors

For living rooms, hallways and puja corners, standalone wall hangings add a festive touch without needing a doorframe. Mirror-centre and star mandala designs catch the light beautifully once your diyas and fairy lights are on.

4. Choose a colour story

Most Diwali decor reads well in one of two directions: warm marigold-and-red for a traditional festive palette, or pastel pink-and-white for a softer, contemporary look. Picking one story and sticking to it across your door, garlands and indoor accents makes the whole space feel pulled together rather than mismatched.

5. Don't decorate the doorway alone

A common mistake is spending the whole budget on one large door piece and leaving the rest of the home bare. Splitting your decor across the entrance, a garland along the staircase or balcony, and one or two wall hangings indoors usually gives a more complete look for the same spend.
